Nashville Bombing
Brian LeGette - Awards Ceremony Keynote
Accidents, Mistakes and Bad Decisions
Christmas morning, at the end of 2020, Nashville was rocked when a man detonated a vehicle bomb beside an telephone network routing facility. Four hours later, 9-1-1 lines went silent across 66 counties impacting several states lasting for three days. Metro Nashville DEC Director Stephen Martini will talk through what happened that weekend, what they did to mitigate the outage, and what they’re doing now to prepare for another outage.
Accidents, mistakes, and bad decisions have different root causes and should be handled differently for the best outcomes. All three provide valuable learning opportunities and involves accountability. To react and treat them the same way may undermine leadership and trust within an organization–as well as increase the likelihood that “bad” actions could be repeated.
This workshop will use fire service scenarios to explore the differences among these accidents, mistakes, and bad decisions. It will also provide tools and tips for making better decisions–whether individually or organizationally to improve leadership and morale.
Stephen Martini has served as Tennessee: APCO Chapter Vice-President, President and Executive Council Representative (2015-2020); Tennessee NENA Legislative Committee member (2015); Tennessee Emergency Communications Board (Member/Vice-Chair, 2018-Present); Police/Fire Dispatcher—City of Chattanooga (2004-2008); Training/Quality Assurance Specialist—Hamilton County ECD (2008-2013); Communications Center Supervisor—City of Brentwood (2013-2016); Director—Williamson County DoEC (2016-2020); Director—Metro Nashville DEC (2020—Present).
Brian LeGette, chief executive officer, was born and bred in Charleston, SC. Brian has been a firefighter since 1990 and currently holds the position of Deputy Chief of Operations. He attended Trident Technical College as well as local and national schools for career development in the fire industry. He teaches leadership-oriented programs and is also a South Carolina Fire Academy Instructor.
